Junior Police Academy
The Junior Police was started in 1997 by Deputy Chief David M. Poirier and is held annually in the fall now under the leadership of Officer Theodore M. Caiola. Enrollment by Upper Gwynedd Township residents fills the eighty-five spots for six through twelve year olds very quickly. The academy is held on a Saturday and Sunday for a four to five hour period and introduces the children to the many aspects of police employment from physical exercises to anti-drug education and how the use of drugs affects the community requiring police officers. Appearances of special emergency services including fire and emergency medical personnel are included in the experience. Other special services that have appeared are a Medivac Helicopter, State Police Helicopter, canine, officers, the Philadelphia Mounted Equine Unit, the Montgomery County Bomb Squad, and the North Penn Tactical Response Team. The department is also grateful for the assistance from staff, outside agencies, parents, and friends of the program that volunteer to assist the children.
